even more holiday materialism yet again because i have no inner life

Had to leave the house last night after so many days of fucking holiday goddamned cheer. Went to B&N, which was of course fruitless, but still had the benefit of being not the house. The children's section looked as though there had been tiny rioting earlier. The clerks all looked sort of shell-shocked. Helped a lady find a copy of Chamber of Secrets. Continual traffic around the LOTR display, as America tries to figure out which books go in what order, the big numbers on the spines notwithstanding.

Then went to Blockbuster with the gift card Kim and David gave me. Came out with a big Gund stuffed Hagrid. He's amazing. Little knit scarf, microfiber 'leather' coat with working pockets, huge boots, tons of detail. His eyes are drawn like little Jesus fish, doubtless pissing off various book-burning mail-order clerics no end. Am thrilled to pieces, since I would never have bought him on my own. "It's just what I wanted, how evah did you know?"

There should be a rule....

If you're too dumb to see the numbers on the spine, you're too dumb to buy the books.

There was a lot of milling around at the LOTR display at our B&N too. Including one adult who kept asking the clerk, "Why aren't these books in the children's section?"

"Well, ma'am, I think it may be because of all the violence, nightmarish imagery, the immense and archaic vocabulary, and the endless passages of exposition."

I believe the clerk's response was, "Because they are not children's books."

Yours was better.

I like hers. It puts off the inevitable follow up questions such as, "It has lots of explosions?" or "What's 'archaic'?"
