what the facebook/twitter thing actually does

My dearest LiveJournal friends list, I know you guys are upset and worried right now but..

I NEED YOU TO STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND READ THIS

Im sorry about shouting in large font but this is really important and I need you guys to read this very carefully as a bit of a game of telephone is happening and some things need to be set straight. Not all of you misunderstand the feature but many of you do.

The new features that were relased yesterday regarding Facebook/Twitter Connect crossposting: news post // lj_releases post // FAQ 279

First and foremost. What exactly this feature does, is allows a user to easily repost entries or comments to Facebook and Twitter. The feature to post entries to Facebook is not new, it has been on the site for quite some time now and only affected public posts.

The new feature has a few parts to it. )

Word. UP.

My primary reaction to all of this has been: "If you have seekrit stuff you're posting under f-lock that you don't want getting out, and you're seriously worried about people who can read it rebroadcasting it willy-nilly elsewhere, via commentary-tickybox-repost or whatever, why do you have these people on that filter?"

This is not a problem created or solved by technology. It is a problem of asshaberdashery and poor befriendings-judgment.

I am unpersuaded with regard to accidental clicking. The keyboard shortcut issue, maybe. But I have a good inch of space between the FB tickybox and the "post comment" button on my browser. (Though I am fully willing to admit that I may well be atypical; YMMV, of course.)

My life is also a pretty low-drama zone, so my expectation for the worst thing that's likely to happen is friends seeing something so random and out-of-context that it makes no sense...

But you post about it in a public entry of someone else's LJ, when any of those people could be reading here.

I have clinical depression, too. The implication that it is something of which I ought to be ashamed, or need to keep hidden, is frankly insulting.

Please leave.

Yeah, what I meant by that was that I acknowledge that I'm pretty privileged on those kinds of front, so I'm probably a bit undersensitive. Sorry that didn't come through.

Happily all ways round, it now appears to be a moot issue, since LJ actually does, on occasion, listen, and has changed it so that only comments on public entries can crosspost. Hey Facebook, take a lesson!

I agree, in principle, and of course nothing on the net is truly private if somebody's bored and has the skills to go snooping around. But I've seen way too many deliberate friendslock-breaking shenanigans, and sometimes people who seem utterly trustworthy...aren't, so much.

Or they're just stupid. One recent incident can be summed up as: "What, you didn't want anyone mentioning the stuff in that locked post? That you specifically told us not to talk about, especially in that one place? Oh, crap, sorry, 'cause I just did that exact thing. So I shouldn't do that again, right? I'll keep that in mind."

Also, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't have tweeted that bank robbery proposal earlier this evening. D'oh!

That doesn't mean you're cancelling, right? I just got a neat bandit hat :(

Oh, come on, how else are you going to recruit the flash mob for the synchronized dance portion of the plan?
