Comforting is exactly the right word. It makes me feel better just to look at it.

You mentioned Charles Williams! Charles Williams, the forgotten Inkling, the true genius and saint of the bunch.

I knew you were brilliant; I didn't know you were *that* brilliant.

Dude, he had Prester John saying mass in a novel, and had the balls to have him say he was also the Virgin Mary. What's not to love?

And then the Evil Mirror Universe Charles Williams (and the other Inklings) turned up in a Doctor Who novel a year or two back, Mad Dogs and Englishmen. He encourages Tolkien to finish his grand fantasy epic about dogs. The cover is neon pink and has a white Standard Poodle holding a revolver.

Books like this are the reason I find it hard to appreciate Stargate and Smallville.

Winter's coming, so I hope to get some more Williams under my Hanes Her Way.

Man, where can I get that book??

*hearts standard poodles*

I have a hard time with Williams' prose, but I really liked his poems on Taliessin and King Arthur and the Grail. I also occasionally take a crack at his theological writing. I should try his novels again--I may have matured enough to really appreciate them.

Right here. Dollar ninety-eight used.

He...he wrote poetry?

Hm...

I bought the book. *thwaps wrist* Bad me! But I couldn't resist.

Williams' poetry seems to be still in print (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0802815782/qid=1098295037/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/002-8314178-6352839?v=glance&s=books), though a used bookstore is probably as good a bet as Amazon. It's all about Taliessin (also spelled "Taliesin"), King Arthur's court poet, and the unity of pagan wisdom with Christianity, and the Grail, and stuff. Deep, but also rathre shiny.

Also, I am wrong. The Poodle has a raygun. And a cigarette.

I like Updike. A lot more than Irving, that's for sure.
