Ann: 'kay. I got one, two...aw, dang it. I have to give you a Twenty. I'm sorry.
Checker: Try your pocket.
Ann: There's just keys and...hey! *pulls out $.30 exactly*
Checker: See?
Ann: Wow. You...How did you -- OH MY GOD! YOU HAVE X-RAY VISION AND YOU LOOKED IN MY PANTS!
Everyone else in the store: *stares*

Well, the 10,000 yen bill, roughly the equivalent of a hundred (depending on exchange rate), which is what everyone uses for shopping. Even if you're just getting a pack of gum at the convenience store, you can pay for it with a hundred.

What you CAN'T do is pay with a check or credit card. Cash-based society. Even if the store accepts credit cards (rare), the cashiers don't know what to do with them. ...It's rather amusing to watch, actually. ("Help! This foreigner just gave me this plastic thing, what do I do?!")
