INT: Hobby Lobby checkout line

Checker: That'll be $2.30
Ann: 'kay. I got one, two...aw, dang it. I have to give you a Twenty. I'm sorry.
Checker: Try your pocket.
Ann: There's just keys and...hey! *pulls out $.30 exactly*
Checker: See?
Ann: Wow. You...How did you -- OH MY GOD! YOU HAVE X-RAY VISION AND YOU LOOKED IN MY PANTS!
Everyone else in the store: *stares*

Hee! My first reaction would have been "psychic!", which wouldn't have made sense unless you were wearing sentient trousers, but I'm not always quick on my feet.

Seems a perfectly reasonable conclusion to me....

Clark Kent had a summer job as a cashier when he was in high school. This kind of thing used to happen there *all the time*...!

...And if this were Japan, you'd just hand the checker a hundred and not think twice about it.

Apologizing for a twenty...man, I'm dreading the culture shock.

Well, the 10,000 yen bill, roughly the equivalent of a hundred (depending on exchange rate), which is what everyone uses for shopping. Even if you're just getting a pack of gum at the convenience store, you can pay for it with a hundred.

What you CAN'T do is pay with a check or credit card. Cash-based society. Even if the store accepts credit cards (rare), the cashiers don't know what to do with them. ...It's rather amusing to watch, actually. ("Help! This foreigner just gave me this plastic thing, what do I do?!")

I had exact change once, on the way home from space camp. I had a horde of coins after being a bunch of spacey souvenirs, and when we stopped outside of memphis on the way home, I had the exact amount of coinage to pay for a chocolate milk and almond joy! ($2.71)

I was once going through the metal detector at the airport, and they gave me the whole: have you removed any metallic items, keys, loose change, and I pointed at the little basket which contained all of the above. Then the bloke asked: do you have any Fisherman's Friends in your pocket. And I did. It was creepy.
