I can't be in love if it's plastic
Nov. 26th, 2008 11:09 pmThanks to the miracle of the region-free DVD player, I've been watching something called Snuff Box. Which is sketch comedy, except when it's being a sitcom. With music. And porn. And savage beatings. Also there are hangings, time travel, and whores. It's surreal and dreamlike, though not necessarily a good dream.
(These videos are NSFW, NSF small children, and probably not something you want to play in the house with all the relatives there for Thanksgiving. Unless your relatives are like mine, in which case, turn up the volume.)
Here is a small example of what goes on:
That's Darkplace's Matt Berry as...Matt Berry, utter swine, dick, and fuckhead. He does this sort of thing a lot.
There are also songs, usually variations of this tune:

Dear Danny Butterman: Your movies suck.
Oct. 27th, 2008 10:10 amWatched Die Hard last night, in preparation for a story I'm theoretically writing. Apart from Alan Rickman's rather delightful scenery chewing (om nom nom), it was a tedious piece of bloated crap. I'm glad I didn't pay theater money to see it back in the day, since it would only have helped to kill my love of movies that much sooner. Also, hi there James Shigeta, you are always awesome.
I did like the bit where Bruce, Alan, and stupid exec are all on the phone, and Bruce is trying to save exec's life and exec is too stupid to figure it out.
I can't help but thinking that if Bruce hadn't been there, the robbers would have stolen their crap, blown up some shit, and left. Much lower body count and less property damage.
Still, a more watchable holiday movie than The Christmas Shoes.

The rules are easy, just post 10 things that recently made you happy! Then tag 10 people and force them to post this meme on their LJs. Because it is good. Everyone needs a little happiness once in a while.
1. Frame clearance at Shopko.
2. Called electric company, got an actual human on the phone. With luck they will come trim my trees, so the trees won't (a) rip out the power cables and (b) scrape on the roof and scare the hell out of me at 3 a.m.
3. Got my Paranoia Agent bag fixed so I don't have to carry a Meijers bag to work.
4. Nearing bottom of laundry pile.
5. That dog that drives by the house twice a day, yelping, with doppler effect.
6. Spore
7. "Well hi there kittyOH MY GOD YOU'RE A POSSUM OH JESUS!"
8. Brass Eye and, consequently, my region-free DVD player.
9. Waving hello to the Asians next door. We have no language in common, so we wave and say HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII! As you do. I hope they aren't serial killers.
10. Mashed potatoes. OM NOM NOM.
Not tagging because.

IFC has licensed The IT Crowd with Richard Ayoade, which is awesome even though I don't get that channel, while Adult Swim will be showing the exquisite LOOK AROUND YOU OMGYAYAYAYAYAYAYYYYYYYYY.

Quark is coming to DVD. I remember it very, very well -- and yet I'm still excited.

cannot cope.
Jun. 30th, 2008 10:13 amFriday I went to Electrocircuitmart to look at DVD burners. The burning part isn't terribly urgent, but the drive that came with the new computer is not a DVD drive. This means no movies, and no loading pretty much any game that doesn't go wacka-wacka.
So I sat in the aisle, reading boxes and texting
cybertardis with model numbers. Also chatting with a mildly hyper fella who was trying to decide between a DVD burner or a portable hard drive.
I rather like portable hard drives. They look like candy and have cunning little stripes.
Anyway, after texting
cybertardis with info on what was available, I asked her, "Which should I get?" "Cheapest," she said. Well okay.
Saturday morning's mail contained a small envelope from the IRS with the ECONOMIC STIMULUS! logo. Sadly, rather than a check, it was a small letter telling me that I will soon receive a check. Fuckin' teases.
Saturday night I hooked up the burner and loaded the software. I played a DVD, then successfully burned two discs of fansub anime (yeah, I know, but until the US owners actually bother to release the damned thing, as they've been promising, loudly, for two years, fuck 'em) and did not cause an electrical fire.
Then I tested its gaminess by loading Sim City Societies, and played the tutorial.
Yes, this is one of those stories that ends with, "And the next thing I knew, it was 2 a.m."
Spent Sunday paying dearly for Saturday night. Also, my garage door broke, locking my entire family inside fortunately with the car out of the garage. There's a garage guy coming to look at it tomorrow. I'm sure it will be a festive affair. At least I know where my guvmint stimulus check is going.
My brother e-mailed me, asking if he could come collect his ex-wife's antique buffet sideboard thing. Which, since it's hers, of course he can. This is of course the piece of furniture I selected to house my new computer, in part because I knew this would magically cause him to finally come get the thing.
So if I have any stimulus left over from the garage door fella, it's going to a computer thingie.
It could all be worse. I mean, it's not like I spent much of yesterday alternating between bed and the smallest room, battling with a rather unpleasant little digestive bug.
Oh, wait. It's exactly like that.

It's still purple, but it looks less like Barbie and the Magic Slackers and more like Spaced now.

Yesterday we posted the press release from BBC Video for Spaced - The Complete Series, coming to stores in North America on July 22nd. Our story included your first look at the package art for this long-awaited box set, which we obtained from BBC sources. However, since posting the artwork yesterday, we've seen numerous fan questions about whether this is the final version of the artwork for this set.
This morning we spoke to a BBC PR representative about this, and we were told that this picture (shown again below) was actually only draft art, and possibly shouldn't have gone out just yet. The final package art hasn't been approved, we're informed. It could look similar, or maybe quite different...we're not sure at this time. Stay tuned, though, and we'll bring the final version to you just as soon as we can!

May. 5th, 2008 10:11 amWorked on clipping the hedges again. This week's installment involved an aluminum ladder, but sadly no comedy impalings, so I'll spare you.
Came home from Best Buy with Kujibiki Unbalance 1 (it includes a new episode of Genshiken, so WOOT!) and the second Haruki Suzumiya. With luck will get to watch some tonight, while complaning about how much my arms hurt.
Hit page 50 in the current Moleskine. Still haven't got an entire story out of the damned thing, but I've put in more work and gotten less, so...wa-hey.
