I've noticed that vomit seems to be more acceptable on TV than it used to be," said David Shore, an executive producer of "House," a hospital drama on Fox. Perhaps that's because of reality television, with its penchant for recreational drinking and upchuck-inducing eating competitions. Or maybe it's the clinical approach the "CSI" shows take to bodily fluids. "I watch 'CSI,' and I just go, 'Oh, my God,' " Mr. Shore said. Whatever the reason, Tuesday's episode of "House" features a man not only vomiting prodigiously, but also doing so on another person. How do they film that? It takes several camera angles, some yogurt and a machine. Kate Aurthur talked to the people who made it work.

John Gray, Reelistic F/X

It's all about trickery - camera angles and the proper cutaways, so you can sell the idea that it's coming out of someone's mouth.

We use the same machine for other things. If an aorta burst, and blood was gushing out of them - it can propel other things besides throw up. Urine, for example. At first they were talking about how they wanted a projectile so it would shoot out of the mouth four feet. We designed something to do that. But then on the day, it was scaled way back.

The best possible scenario is you use food products. Yogurt is a good thing to start with as a base. And then bits and pieces of other kinds of food, so it has that undigested look.

Nicholas D'Agosto, vomiter

I didn't know there would be a machine involved. Those kinds of things for an actor are very exciting. I hold the tube from this specific angle, it was like a shooting game. I make myself gag, and someone works the air machine and pops the vomit right into her [an actress]. I had vomit in my mouth, so it looks like it's starting to come out. She's about to kiss me, and I start to kind of gag. Everything with my dialogue was shot before the vomit was in my mouth.

You only have so many takes, because wardrobe sets aside only so many shirts.

Amanda Seyfried, vomited upon

We actually did it in one take. It was such a relief. They were like: "We got it! Your reaction was great." It was nasty. It got all down my bra and my underwear. I smelled like orange juice and cottage cheese.
