So. Second Wednesday in a row spent cowering in the basement, listening to the tornado sirens go off. I cannot begin to describe how annoying and scary this is. Also dull. The accumulating stress is making the entire city go wiggy.

Channel 8 weather guy, as a rule, starts to lose steam after the first hour and a half, and starts coming out with things like, "Tornados are bad." Last night he was reduced to drawing new warnings on the screen with that pen thing sports announcers use, because the staff just couldn't keep up. It was rather charming, really.

Window developed a massive leak right onto a bookcase. Fortunately the only things lost were old mixtapes and VHS cassettes that needed to be got rid of anyway. Tried to go out and look at it from outside, but the rain was overflowing the gutters and I only got a thorough dousing for my trouble. I lost my cellphone in all the towels, and had to call myself several times to find it. Morning revealed a sinkhole-like feature that will need to be filled in.

Deb is related to one of the poor kids who was killed by the storm, so I am glad I did not explain my morning tardiness as being due to having to pick bits of boy scout out of the chimney.

My mom's advice to friends and relatives who had just given birth was always "it's real hard to kill 'em." That was until she offered this advice to a coworker, who replied that her first child had died of SIDS.

Yeah, there's no coming back from that one.

I still like that excuse.

I've been worrying about you folks in the heartlands with all the storms and floods. Eeek!

I'm beginning to think mother nature hates us humans...or is taking out her menopausal hormones out on us. What with Asian cyclones and massive earthquakes, record number of tornadoes and floods...oh, and wildfires let's not forget that. Is there another planet we can live on?

Oh, and hey, it's hurricane season down here. Always a load of laughs.

We do at least have the advantage of not having to evacuate every time the siren goes off. That's gotta be good times.

Well, technically, if it was SIDS, she didn't actually kill it. Your mom's advice still holds.

Oh, sure, and there's some logic to it, i.e. don't worry about every little thing that the kid eats or gets into or knocks over, but still.

At this point in her life, my mom seems to be convinced that all the natural disasters and crazy weather events are pointing to the Apocalypse.

This from a Catholic, no less.

True, but then you don't have much time to evacuate. Not that it'll do you any good. Can't outrun a tornado.

Wasn't Europe completely under water a year or so back? I seem to recall that they turned Mont Blanc into a swim-up bar...

Has Pat Robertson been by to tell you how you've angered Almighty Gawd yet? It might be helpful to assassinate certain South American presidents, for example.

Well, I always consider it a minor miracle that everyone in my mother and father's families (including them and they were wee) made it through 1918 Pandemic.
