This stupid Burger King ad for Lord of the Rings light-up glasses is enough to make me want to boycott the movie, and take my hardcover boxed set out on the front walk and set it on fire. I hope those of you outside the US are spared this horror.

Nope. Us Canucks are cursed with it too. I get all excited because I think it's a real preview, and then my eyeballs are randomly raped. Faith not happy.

I've seen thirty or forty for every 'real' LOTR ad. I'd like to find the copy writer responsible and feed him his own nipples.

BeHOLD!

The bit where they convert that guy's real live face to the plastic-icy-looking version of his face that's on the light-up cup freaks me out, for some reason I can't quite define.

It seems the ONLY LOTR television commercials are for those damn cups. ::shudders:: Curse international broadcast.

Hmmm...

I think I've seen the commercials you're talking about. Jill's right. The one for Aragorn(?) looks like they're freezing his face(yuck!). I will probably go see the movie, even though I've not been able to make it through the books(Yes, I know--::gasp!:: Sacrilege! :)

Yeah, it's kinda like Han Solo being encased in carbonite, but without it happening off-camera. Ick.

And everytime I assume it will be a cup ad, I'm wrong and it's a real promo. *sigh* I think someone really wanted to torture us.

Tell me about it. I scream bloody murder every time I see that damn thing. I'm surprised they didn't do something similar for "Prince Of Egypt" -- as long as they're committing sacrilege, they may as well go for broke!

They tried, but they couldn't find a Kosher fast-food chain.

Instead, their marketing partner was the always pro-inclusion Wal-Mart.

I think I'm pretty lucky. I have not yet been tortured with the sight of those advertisments or the glasses. The only thingy connected to the LOTR that they show on TV here is the trailer followed by this flash card saying sponsored by Hotlink which is a local prepaid molbile phone service. i have no problem with that partly because Hotlink is sponsoring my admission to the LOTR premiere
Hmm... I just realised that they have LOTR goblets and glasses made from pewter. The have the characters faces carved into them. The gandalf one looks rather nifty. I don't know *shrugs*. They're rather expensive. about 350 ringgit for the goblet, 150 ringgit for a glass. I don't thinkt at they're the same glasses you mentioned... or are they?

Not even close to the same thing; we're talking about cheap glasses you can get at the local fast-food restaurants when you order a soda. Them pewter things sound nifty, although it still would be kinda upsetting to see someone's face morph into one.

I looked up the ringgit exchange rates at the Bank Negara Malaysia ('cuz I'm a curious person who was on hold for about ten minutes on a phone call...dangerous combo, there!) and if I'm reading the page right it's about 3.8 ringgit to the dollar, so that would be something like $40 for the glass and a bit over $90 for the goblet. (The other way 'round makes it over $1000 for the goblet, so I'm guessing I'm doing it the right way...) That was fun, and the person on the other end FINALLY picked up the phone, so all is good in my world right now. 'course, I'm not watching one of those ads on TV...

Yup. You're right. It's US$1 to 3.8 ringgit. Ah... but I here have to take it as a dollar for dollar case. So 350 ringgit would still be expensive for poor me. Haha.. my friend said that the smeargol one freaked her out. But.. the galadriel and gandalf goblet look okay to me. The way Gandalf's beard winds round to form the narrow handle part of the goblet rather amuses me.

Feels blessed that she doesn't have to sufffer from burger king ads

Well, Jennie answered my "Whut's a Ringit?" question.

There's always been LOTR merchandise, of varying levels of legality and quality, but the BK glasses have red light bulbs in the stems, and the TV ads are so obnoxious (obnoxious narrator, stupid puns and 'comedy' Middle Earthers) that I won't try to recount them here. It's shocking when a real trailer for the movie comes on and reminds you that it's got actual cool potential, and doesn't have anybody in the cast who sounds like The Tick.

Yeah, well, I bet if I wrote a book called "Ann Larimer: Chained and Tamed", and someone made a movie about it, and Burger King started giving away Ann-Larimer-Chained-&-Tamed light-up glasses, and then some fan of the book took it out to the front walk and set it on fire, just cuz she didn't like the promo commercial, I bet you wouldn't like that very much, huh?
