The Man came to put in the new water heater yesterday. It is literally the last thing I need at the moment, other than a cup of fire, but at least I can dry out the wet crap in the laundry room and kick it to the curb. Still no sign of new AC. There is a severe heat warning up for at least two days, so I have set up a card table in the basement with a metal chair, so I can live the lifestyle I enjoyed when I was four. Except I'm better at coloring now.

I keep hoping a spot will open up, but that will probably mean somebody's died from the heat, so I'm a bit ambivalent. But only a bit, because the official thermostat temperature upstairs is hovering around 90F.

At least the power bill for July will be low.

Ugh, that's nasty about the heat. Hopefully the basement will help.

We're having that here, too. The heat index this upcoming Saturday is supposed to be one hundred and ten.

The basement cooled down once I killed the AC, which was just pumping outside air into it. My main worry is Sunday, when we have no public transport because Jesus or something, so I can't hide at the office or the mall unless I fork over for two $10 cab rides. My boss has kindly invited me to sleep at her place, but I am reluctant because there is a week to go and it could end very badly.

110 heat index is actually worse than plain 110F, because it probably means humidity on top of the heat, so be very careful, especially if you're not used to it. Find out where the nearest cool shelter is just in case the AC croaks. In an emergency, those cheap cube-shaped swamp coolers actually work if you sit right next to them. I laid in a second one so I can sleep. Do NOT just keep fans running, because all they do is move the hot air around and you'll just get heatsick but with moving air.

That's like a ten-degree bump in humidity. I'm in an apartment building, and yeah, I'm keeping track of places with AC I can go.

We had close to a month of over 100 a few years back, and it was deeply unpleasant. The kind of thing where you can feel the sun reflect of the sidewalk and go right up your face. Sometimes even through your shoes.

I think we prefer -20 in the winter. You just pull out your big coat and mutter, "Oh fuck it."

That reminds me, I need to refill the squirrels' saucepan with water.

Make a backup plan just in case, and you'll feel less paranoid. Spend the day at the Met or the mall or something, and drink all the water. Find out where your neighborhood shelter is. Put it all on your phone *and* write it on paper. Then you've done all you can do and can get on with things.

My parents' AC went out in the middle of the heat wave and they refused to go elsewhere. "We have fans!" said my mother. Fans do not help when they are BLOWING HOT AIR.

(All is well now with them, fortunately.)

Nope, not yet. Happily the temperature has dropped 20 degrees so I am less likely to die before they get it put in. Also, the plumbing genius was wrong and the source of the water leak was not my (now replaced) water heater.
