What part is tripping you up? To me they're mostly like LJ communities, where modding is important and each community has it's own tenor. Like, the quilting community is very focused on supportive answers, encouragement, and praising someone's accomplishments. My city community is a lot like the LJ comm used to be: a mix of people actually answering things, shitposters, conspiracy theorists, and dead horse beaters. So you kinda have to pick and choose. Nice thing is that there's often a couple of subs for different topics so if one community doesn't work, you might find a different one. The up-voting and down-voting does move some of the worst nonsense to the bottom of the comments or hide it in some cases.
That said, I've only ever been a commenter. I've never posted a thing so no idea how that works.
There's a lot of turmoil at the moment with the admin-forced changes ala Musk screwing up moderating tools that keep the spam and really shitty posters to a minimum. Some subs are completely closed, some are only posting things as NSFW so that Reddit doesn't get any advertising revenue.
Also, if you just want to follow the posts from a particular sub, you can run them thru RSS which is what I do with a lot of stuff where I just want to see the pictures.
Yeah I got the comm thing okay (one that I joined just got a new mod because no one has posted there in 3 years), and I figured out how to block creeps and up-down. I'm also getting YOU GOT 7 UPVOTES COME SEE! messages and they're mostly lying.
Posting is mostly easy to figure out, but at least in art comms it doesn't always work the first time.
Okay that answers one of my questions, which is why am I getting weird spam from people who don't exist so I can't block them when I go to do it? They're like tumblr pornbots except not real.
Yeah, I get that and follows from ghost accounts that I can't block because they've already been suspended. So now my account says 1 follower but when I click on it, it goes nowhere.
I think you can turn that off in the settings. https://www.reddit.com/settings/feed and unclick "Enable home feed recommendations" I think is the one you want.
cyprinella has already answered all of your questions, so the only thing I'll add is that I basically only go to reddit.com/new so that I can see posts in reverse chronological order the way God intended. There is sadly no way to force this as your default view, unfortunately.
