My friend Berk gave me a book on Medieval manuscripts for Christmas, so I decided to try an illuminated capital. Here's a letter "I"* for the first chapter of The Hobbit, in watercolor and acrylic for the gold bits. Opinions sought: should the blue pinstripe continue on around Smaug?

But it would be way better if Smaug was turned the other way and setting the hobbit house on fire and there were hobbits inside that were about to be burned alive because they were trying to rescue the portrait of Great Aunt Ada.
