Reading Bored of the Rings for the first time in 20+ years. It is truly shameful* how much of it I have down by heart, even now.

It is because of this book that, whenever I have been required to create a map, it is certain to contain a province or geographical feature called "Cantinflas."

*When I say "shameful" I of course mean "amusing as fuck."

Actually I've always remembered "...And think of dirty things/Of deviant dwarves who suck their toes/And elves who do it in teams." Which means that, unfortunately, Bilbo's fireside song in Fellowship of the Ring makes me laugh in a terribly inappropriate way.

When Betty and I went to LoTR, I kept bugging her by reciting the inscription. And saying stuff like Look it's Goodgulf! And there's Frito! If she hadn't already seen the film she'd have killed me. Now she just keeps calling the elf Legolamb.

I haven't read it in ages but I always remember "I am Arrowroot son of Arrowshirt. I have many names, you know" (we know we know) and the various characters' names. I've privately been referring to the various characters as Goodgulf, Dildo, Frito, Moxie, Pepsi, Gimlet and Legolamb. Just because I can. ;)

I started reading BotR a while ago. It amused me beyond all belief. However, I decided that I needed to read all of LotR before I treated myself to the parody. Another perk for finishing the series...

I found a copy in a B Daton circa 1974, but that probably doesn't help you much. It was reissued last year in trade paperback:

It's been given a truly heinous new cover illustration, but is otherwise intact. Copies of the old edition still turn up in used-paperback stores for a buck or two.

Verses are all very well and good, but my favorite part of BOTR may be the introduction, "Concerning Boggies" ("the kind of creatures you have to drink a quart of Old Overcoat to see nowadays").
