Well, imagine Mr Oscar Wilde's critical works - The Artist As Critic, for example - combined with Mr Aldus Huxley's Brave New World. Then imagine that some tedious Gallic fuck who can't tell a joke to save his life yet insists on making waggish remarks about German composers has removed every single bit of interest.
It was kinda like that.
