"It's the hallmark of publishing success, the only part of the book section many people look at."

But what exactly is a bestseller?

Ask Robert James Waller, Peter David, or the latest senator and his ghostwriter. Not that I don't look at or read some books on the top-ten lists, but for the most part, what bestseller lists give me is a very strong sense of what I really don't want to read.

So in that regard I guess they are quite helpful, she said unpleasantly.

Every couple of years it means I get a 40% discount and free overnight shipping on the new Harry Potter.

Feh. I'm happy when someone I care about (i.e. Neil Gaiman) gets into the Bestseller list but I've been reading his stuff since he was an obscure comic book artist. If I read something that is a 'best seller', it's generally by accident.

"Hey, Verne, let's hit the book store"
"Okay, Earl, but remember, I'll only read what everyone else in the country is reading. I'm only looking in the best seller section. I like to decide by the pretty covers"
