Note to both of you: DVD players are as cheap as VCRs were a couple years ago (think I've even seen some for under $100). So go for it. You'll never look back. (Me, I can't wait until DVD recorders get cheaper, so I can kiss off VHS forever, *sigh*)

aka the dreaded "...it has been formatted to fit your screen." In other words, not widescreen, so that the vid is often altered to pan from one side to another to show the viewer all elements in a shot - or the missing bits are cut off altogether. You notice it a lot in old ultra-widescreen epics like Ben-Hur or Around the World in 80 Days.

The Apex AD-1200. Circuit City sells them for about $60 and you can get an even better deal on an open box. The unit is butt ugly and has no LCD display, but if you can find one with the white Kodak sticker you can hack it with the remote into an all-region player.

All-region means you can play DVDs from other countries that won't play on US (region 1) players.
