This day is turning out like an episode of The Prisoner: The Animated Series. It's the annual World Day on the Mall, which is a sort of multicultural fair thing with food and bands, now combined with "Patriot Day" (schwa?) so that folks can celebrate their heritage with the flags at half-staff. Between the bands and the PA system, from inside the building it sounds like they're holding an elephant rodeo.

Music leaking in has been largely polka. This is what comes of living in a place where our ethnic heritage is, not to put too fine a point on it, largely lame. There's little I can add to the festivities unless I go out and boil the flavor out of some vegetables, then don a strap-on and bugger a sheep.

Ventured out at lunchtime. I saw a tiny child in full Three Amigos regalia in the lobby, apparently waiting to go out and dance.

Barber shop had a sign in its window: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - PEOPLE WHO DEMAND FREEDOM OF SPEECH USE IT AS AN EXCUSE NOT TO EXERCISE FREEDOM OF THOUGHT! Uh...what the fuck does that even mean?

Found MIIB calendar for 2003 (www.meadweb.com). Rather nice, except that some rocket scientist decided that the Corn Face, Dogshit, and Third Eye aliens each deserved A FULL PAGE. So for the second time in 20 minutes, What the fuck?

Many flag t-shirts, sweaters, and temporary facial tattoos. If it makes you feel better, honey... Substitute Huskers for the flag and it might as well be a football game day. Hooray for our side.

^_^ There's a story in the new Onion that put me in mind of it:

http://www.theonion.com/onion3833/i_regret_to_say.html

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Though poor Mr McGoohan would probably blow a vein at the notion.

Darn football. Darn nonsensical thoughts for the day.

Did you ever read that comic... er, graphic novel sequel to The Prisoner? Rather nifty, it is.

You can say "comic." It's a COMIC BOOK!!! I HEREBY RECLAIM THE PHRASE!

Uh, sorry.

Anyway, yes, I have, and it's lovely. I should dig it out again, in fact.

The hero, whose name I forget, reminds me a bit of Agent Elle. Maybe it's the hair. Or the don't give me shit attitude.

I was thinking the same thing. She predates Elle by a good decade, though. Maybe the designer of the cartoon was a comics fan.

{{Barber shop had a sign in its window: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - PEOPLE WHO DEMAND FREEDOM OF SPEECH USE IT AS AN EXCUSE NOT TO EXERCISE FREEDOM OF THOUGHT! Uh...what the fuck does that even mean?

Geezzooks! It means the barber is a bloody fascist and/or has too few brain cells to be handling sharp objects near people's heads safely. Stay far away.}}

IT MAKES NO SENSE! For the love of God, if you're going to be a fascist wacko, do it in understandable sentences.

I feel like the Landru computer now. Hurty hurty brain.

{{No, it does make sense in a fascist way. Trans: " If you're speaking out about your right to speak freely then you are not using your brain. Obviously, speaking out about fundamental rights is a bad thing. People should keep their mouths shut and walk lock step."

I wish I didn't understand these people, I really do. /-: }}

I suspect there's also some level of "Only stupid, uneducated people 'swear'" behind that sign. Trying to explain to people that most of what they consider "bad" language is in fact coarse or vulgar at worst, and that many words that are considered perfecly polite can in fact be used much more evilly often is a very tiring uphill battle doomed to defeat from the start of it.

Therefore, a lot of folks abbreviate the lengthy debate by simply proclaiming that they're using their fucking right to free speech, and suggesting the troll shove his shit back up his ass where it belongs.

Or something along those lines.

So freedom of speech means not using your brain, or not taking advantage of the "freedom" of thought? you can talk about what you want, as long as you keep it to yourself? and if that guy had the right to put that moronic sign in his window, isn't that speech? or...?

head explodes

I think the barber's got a thin wedge of brain trapped in his skull.

Vali...help us...
