Oh, mayan, you don't ask the easy ones, do you?

Okay. This sounds odd, but for me the thing that taught me the most about anime was getting a solid grounding in manga. Try this:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0870117521/qid=1059068045/sr=2-1/104-6812469-1098339?v=glance&s=books

It's 20 years old, but still valid, and unlike many of the English-language books about anime and manga, the author actually knows what the fuck he's talking about. It will give you the lowdown on the basic genres of manga and anime, and tons of examples of artists and their work. It's also insanely readable and entertaining in its own right.

Mayan = ancient culture that sacrificed people? Yeah, I'm really down with the slang these days. ;)

That sounds fairly sensible to me. In fact, manga would probably be the first stop in anything I did, simply because you need a whole lot more artwork for anime. ;)

I'll think about getting that book - I'm not much of an Amazon whore, but if that's my only option I might go for it. In the mean time, any online resources come to mind? Yes, I am lame. ;)

:( I'm just not that up on online anime resources, I'm sorry. I wouldn't know a place that's reliable with the basics.

Your library should have the Schodt book.
