Dear Ann,

I know you're tired, uncomfortable and vaguely drugged out, but announcing "Hey, Bob Hope's finally dead!" to your officemates is perhaps a bit over the line.

Love,

Ann

But you know, you were only saying what a lot of people were thinking.

When my colleague came around to announce it, I don't think my profound indifference went over well.

My incredibly appropriate response was along the lines of, "Well, it's about time!"

Hey, the celeb dead pool shall no longer be spoiled. What's not to be ok with?

100 is a very good age. I can't feel too sad.

I dunno. Most of the folks who seem sad about it are entirely too young to remember much of his brand of comedy.

You mean the dirty little secret that he hasn't been funny since the 1940's? That one?

I'm young. I've seen him on AMC. I'm not going to cry too much over a 100 year old man who died happily in his sleep.

I think any death is a downer, but I remember some of the On the Road movies. They were not really 'classics' in my youth so much as 'neat old movies.'

He was kind of like an imaginary grandpa.

So I'm on the fence about people who are indifferent. I can understand the POV of "why are you getting all worked up over a celebrity you've never even met in person or knew by anything more than a name/face on a screen."

But on the other hand, comedians in particular always strike a chord with me. Lucille Ball's death gave me the same twinge of "gee, that's sad."

Everybody's entitled to feel how they feel.

I think his work with the USO and his other efforts to support military families somewhat redeems the fact that his humor was really dumb. Where I live there's a retirement village for enlisted widows named after him. I'm assuming that he helped raise money to build it.

I thought he was already dead. No, really. Aside from the hoax a few years back -- I thought he'd quietly kicked off since then. So I thought the radio show this morning making fun of it was a re-run until they made an "Arnold for Governor" joke. Huh!

Harrumph! CBS broke into Martha Stewart this morning so that they could do the 10-min eulogy thing. Since Martha had been effusing over wedding favors at the time (as only Martha can) I was pretty pissed, to say the least.

Um...yeah. A whole series in the early 90s, in which he co-starred with Penny Marshall.
