Watched Citizen Kane with Mom last night. Weirdly enough, it was her idea. We happily tortured each other, me by reciting the dialogue and she by bitching about how 'it didn't really happen that way!' in William Randolph Hearst's life.

Then she called the movie 'boring' and I had to strangle her with an extension cord and bury her in the backyard. No, wait, that only happened in my inside world. Never mind.

I love that movie.

I always think of SNL's addition to it: that the last thing Kane said wasn't just Rosebud. He also said Henri. "Rosebud Henri". Roastbeef on rye.

I like that movie too.

the SNL Wonderful Life skit where they beat the crap out of old man Potter. *sigh*

Citizen Kane is that weird combination of a movie that's so cool you see something new in it every time, combined with a wacko reality and participants who were just so much larger than life that it was almost unbelievable.

Tell me. I finally got that the argument between Kane and Mrs Kane #1 over Bernstein's gift to L'il Kane is really over Mr Bernstein being Jewish yet allowed into their house.

Dude, I LOVE that movie, I can't get enough...
But I can't get other people to like it! (or at least be interested in it!)
I'm capable of singing the mr. Kane song. A capella. That sums up the amount of times I've seen it lately.

I think you can find them on the White Sripes CD (though apparently, they're ilegall!)

Aw, heck.
Here they be:
There is a man,
a certain man
And for the poor you may be sure
That he'll do all he can
Who is this one?
This fav'rite son?
Just by his action
Has the Traction magnates on the run?
Who loves to smoke?
Enjoys a joke?
(HA-HA-HA-HA)
Who wouldn't get a bit upset
If he were really broke?
With wealth and fame
He's still the same
I'll bet you five you're not alive
If you don't know his name
What is his name?...
It's Charlie Kane (It's Mister Kane)
He doesn't like that Mister
He likes good old Charlie Kane.

Who says a miss
Was made to kiss?
And when he meets one always tries
To do exactly this?
Who buys the food?
Who buys the drinks?
Who thinks that dough was made to spend?
And acts the way he thinks?
Now is it Joe? (No, no, no, no!)
(no, no, no, no!)
I'll bet you ten you aren't men
If you don't really know!
What is his name?...
It's Charlie Kane (It's Mister Kane)
He doesn't like that Mister
He likes good old Charlie Kane.

No, but supposedly part of the lyrics were ilegally reproduced on their album.
I read that somewhere. You could always google it.

Oh, God, Perfesser Levine had us write on deep focus in Citizen Kane. The University's film library was relatively small back then, so I saw it and Strangers on a Train at least once a semester.

Now I have that damned theme song running in my head -

Dum de dum de dum de dum. Dum de dum de dum de dum.

But I get to use the cuckoo clock line at least once a quarter.

And ceilings. For some reason, the ceilings are important in film history, but I forget why.

Coz no studios had ceilings (not visible, anyway) until Kane, of course.
