Dear Kate Orman and Kate Orman's Copy Editor:

It's "all right." "ALL RIGHT," all right? Not "alright." For the love of Christ, it's your friggin' language!

Your pal,

Ann

This would --

probably bother me more if I knew who Kate Ormond was.

You're thinking of Ormond Sacker.

Ormond Sacker would never write "alright," all right?

And neither would the man he became.

I loves you! Loves you so much!

I used to get such angry mail about this when I insisted on it in my old grammar guide.

Loves you some more.

Dear People Who Wrote Angry Mail to Dangermom:

Fuck you, you little weasels. If you're writing vernacular dialogue and you want a particular character to look like an idiot, "alright" may be employed in order to do so. If you are writing omniscient or semi-omniscient narrative in standard English, it is TWO GODDAMNED WORDS.

Leave DM alone. If you can take ten minutes to complain, you can take five to learn proper useage for two words. Don't make me kick your little vermin asses.

Eat me,

Ann

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ::kneels to kiss your hem:: This evil mistake should be pointed out and corrected more often!

It really is one of my pet peeves.

This was in a pro novel, for God's sake. In both dialogue and narration.

*aeons pass, then suddenly:*

Which novel? I use "all right" (even though "alright" is in the Macquarie Dictionary), so I'm a bit surprised to have stumbled across this complaint.

AAAAAAAGH!!! Time rift!

One of the New Adventures. It's been so long I can't say for sure which one now -- I read a wodge of them around the time of this entry. Possibly Set Piece. Possibly.

It was especially shocking for being (a) one of yours, and (b) a New Adventure, since youse rite real good an' junk, and the NAs are, as a rule, down with their homies in Grammartown, yo.
