Cleaning out a closet. Found a bajillion issues of Classic X-Men - the good ones with the extra added story pages and the Claremont/Bolton backups.

I say unto the children: THERE WAS A TIME WHEN X-MEN WAS A FUCKING FANTASTIC COMIC! REALLY!

Also found The Heckler and Captain Britain. So yay.

I would like to find whoever fucked up American comics and set them on fire.

Yey, verily I say unto you, yes there was once a time that X-Men was a fantastic comic. And it was good.

I think my collection stopped not long after the Dark Phoenix arc.

The first comics I really got into were from the Age of Apocalypse arc. Years and years pass and I'm *still* obsessed with ultra-dark AUs.

This probably bears no relationship, chronologically or creator-wise, to your fortuitous discovery. I just wanted to share.

AoA was one of the few bits from the 90s that I enjoyed. V. entertaining.

One of the reasons I like AoA is the characters are in actual danger of DEATH dun dun DUN.

Kitty getting squished by Peter was the funniest thing ever. Um, saddest. I meant saddest.

Oh, I loved Classic X-Men - I used to be able to pick them up real cheap at this old drugstore near my house.

I have high hopes for the new Astonishing X-Men. It may just be because I love Kitty Pryde, but ::crosses fingers, knocks wood::, but the first issue was promising.

I love classic x-men. I need more of their issues.

P.S. Boy, Classic X-Men sure got naked at the drop of a hat.

I was noticing that. Storm got her hair done at the same place as Madison the mermaid.

I blame Joe Quesada and anyone who okayed turning their book's character grim and gritty.

P.S. Spiderman actually cracks wise now! OMG

I blame wossname, the Levi's ad kid who couldn't draw. And Jim Lee. And whoever's responsible for making Psylocke into a fucking ninja.

Witness the thoughts of the publishers who began to depend heavily upon what they felt was the backbone of their profits in the industry: The Collector's Mentality:

Comics don't have to be good, 'cos they're just going to be shrink-wrapped and never opened, or they won't be mint anymore.

And if something is REALLY selling well, we can put our crappiest talent on it because it's the title that sells, not the work.

And we'll do SIX different color covers of the same comic because the fanboys'll buy all six, just to have the complete set.

And since (for instance) the "Flea-Man" title is really popular, we'll start generating a whole slew of related monthly titles, like Ultimate Flea-Man, Stories of Flea-Man, The Amazing Flea-Man, Flea-Man/Dust-Might, Pen-Ultimate Flea-Man, Flea-Man Triumphant, Dark Flea!, Worlds of Flea-Man, Tales of Flea-Man, Flea-Man And The Circus, Flea-Man and Friends, so that we can dominate comic-book stores' shelves and crowd out our competitors' books! We'll do this even though we don't really have enough good ideas, good writers, or good artists to handle that many monthly books. I mean: the collectors are going to buy every single Flea-Man title in order to have the complete set, right? Why bother investing in quality?

* * *

Yeah: we bought a comic book store just months before the boom went bust. There were over 9,000 comic book stores in America at the time. I believe there are less than 3,000 now.

I get the impression the American comics industry is one incestuous extended family, what with folks jumping from Marvel to Dark Horse to DC and back to Marvel, etc., and stuff. And of course I can't remember if Warp Comics is under a different name now or if there are any other comic publishers since I'm over 10 years out of the loop.
