Perri the squirrel arrived. You would not believe how much cool they can jam into a three-inch mohair rodent. She's got all this airbrushed dye and paint action going on, and teeny pink hands and feet of felt that is a good eight of an inch thick. I can only imagine what Steiff's mohair fish must be like.

*squees at the music!*

Steiff makes the most amazing things. They're such so unfuckingbelievably expensive that I can nearly always talk myself out of buying them.

I meant to add yesterday that about 2 years ago, I fell into an entire set of the Vanderbears (not literally!) including Muffy and a lot of clothing for next to nothing at auction. I keep meaning to put up most of the outfits (for the big ones) on eBay. Of course this meant buying myself a cheap Hoppy VanderHare at some point (which I did). The only thing I really really want is their outfits to the Bal Masque since I had them for most of the large family members but I can never find 'em for sale at a cheap price. Some of the Muffy tsotchkes are great though -- my mom's friend used to sell them (she gave up her account years ago) and seeing things like Muffy-sized tarot cards for the Gypsy collection was too much.

I doubt I'll ever own much Steiff, but dude, it's Perri. That's the toy-animal equivalent of finding a Marty Hopkirk action figure. (No, they never made Marty action figures. Fuckers.)

Muffy's always driven me mad, mainly because, at retail, her clothes cost more than mine. Fortunately most of the line is so twee that it isn't even an issue. But then there'll be one tiny item so insanely cool that it makes you gnash your teeth -- the tarot cards, one of the sleds, the Blue Pagoda playset, the chess table. Not enough to pay for them, mind, but they're still cool.

I haven't seen anything from the Masque. I'll have to go look.

Of course, when you say "Perri", all I can think of Nicola Bryant and I want to break something. (No offense meant towards your perfectly adorably squirrel!!) I own a few Steiff things -- I've managed to get a few older ones, mostly little, at auction. They need TLC and clean up and don't necessarily have their buttons/tags but who cares? They're cute!!

I never bought any Muffy stuff at retail. That was just insane. My mom's friend did well in terms of sales but she never would discount (bitch!) and plus it was good for me to convince myself not to buy even more expensive collectibles I have no room for. I am guilty of buying vintage Barbie things for a lot more than I'd ever spend on myself ($700 for a dress? Not in this lifetime) but I never could do it for *new* things.

The Bal Masque is just pretty cool and I've always been really into Masquerade Balls and the like. I always thought the Halloween costumes were cute too but again, managed to stop myself from buying them.

Oh, God. The Vanilla Hoare of Doctor Who. Makes Jo Grant look like Marie Curie.

eBay. Steiff made (and makes) a lot of squirrels, most of them nifty. There are usually a few Perris on offer, along with other Steiff squirrels, and nifty tree-rats by other makers. If you want Perri specifically, familiarize yourself with her so you don't get a misidentified one, or can find one that doesn't have the right name. Sellers don't always know what they have, especially if she doesn't have her hang tag or ear tag. There are also sellers who apparently think that 'Steiff' is a generic term for 'stuffed animal,' which leads to some amusing WTF moments.
