Mr Magic Mushrooms gets huge props for the 'very special episode' of The West Wing, which could've been Just Awful but instead was (mostly) nicely done and low-key.
Now if we'd just get a friggin' UPN station...

I have mixed feelings about tonight's West Wing. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but an hour long classroom lecture reiterating every single point of debate I've been hearing and engaging in for the last three weeks wasn't it. Not that those points of debate shouldn't be reiterated, so I'm not sure why I'm annoyed. Bartlett should've been in it *a lot* more than he was. And the setup was really, really, really awkward. Maybe I was just looking for some new perspective here that I didn't get. Maybe there aren't any new perspectives.
So I don't know--I'll give them credit for pulling it off in such a short time, but I don't think it was particularly successful.
I hated the After-School Special introduction. It, and the NBC promos, totally set the wrong tone - made it out to be a remake of Red Alert or something, and made it hard to settle down and just watch the damn thing.
I didn't mind the Socratic Method thing at all - I've heard a lot of the same stuff in the last month, too, but there's been a constant underlying note of hysteria, and a serious lack of context. I'll take a calm reiteration from Flamingo and Co over Nightline Or Bill fucking Maher or Net.weenies forwarding fake Nostradamus quatrains and thinking it's somehow profound.
