I think it would make an enormous difference if it were chocolate cake, as opposed to coconut cake.

Well, yes. It speaks volumes as to what they think of him. I for one would be vaguely insulted by, say, that seed cake that my mom used to make back in her hippie days. But black forest cake sends an entirely different message.
