Been watching Angelic Layer. Much hilarity, since it starts out as a sell-you-stuff anime (like Yu-Gi-Oh! or Pokemon), but since it's entirely fictional, you can't buy any of it.

Angelic Layer a fighting game, played by elaborate, customizable (and, one assumes, hideously expensive) cybernetic dolls. Sort of like Asian BJD fandom, but with (more) hitting. One imagines that there are Angelic Layer early adopters who spend a lot of time on the Internet bitching about how it isn't as cool as it was, since all these damn n00bs have shown up. And arguments over unsanctioned parts -- one character outfits her doll with illegal electrified whips, and picks on newbies who don't know enough to call her on it in order to rack up wins. Surely there must be AL porn sites and naughty doujinshi as well.

My point being, I want a customized robot doll that hits stuff.

Ahh, AL. How I less than three that series so. The manga is also made of total cuteness and ass-kickery (the fight scenes are very good, depending on how much you can tolerate speed lines) they drew it around the same time as Chobits, so the artwork has the similar look, but before they did Tsubasa so everything is still comprehensible.

Everytime I got back and reread the manga I'm always left with an urge to buy my own 1/6 volks or obitsu doll and make my own angel Hikaru. (Well, paint one that looks like her at least, I'd have no clue on how to even start on the outfit.) On of these days I'll probably do it too.

As for the online fandom, good lord. The BJD fandom is already wanky enough, so I can't imagine how it would get if doll fighting was introduced. I'm sure within the next decade or so volks will probably try to make a AL style robot. At least, it certainly looks like they might be working towards that goal.

Oh, well, so long as there's a leaflet...

The whole sewing vinyl thing would be well beyond me. On the other hand, I suppose red lycra would do. The bolty things could be hardware or buttons. The headdress...hm.
