Actually, my 60 cm Obitsu-bodied gals are far away my fave Big Old Dolls. Mostly 'cause I'm aftaid to *touch* the fancy-dancy resin dolls lest I.....I dunno, get germs on them or something.

The down side: Azone standards heads mostly suck donkey balls, so you gotta either be a kewl customizer (me am not) or surgically apply another reasonably-sized head (I chop heads off my Pullip dolls, Bwa-HA-HA!!).

Resin *is* a lot prettier. As long as you're happy with your doll posed sitting or posed standing and keeping 50 feet away.

The first thing I want to make is a full-body Batgirl costume, so the default head and joints don't really matter. Hurrah!

Ooh, I dunno. I've heard that the Obitsu 60cm bodies pose wonderfully, but they never stuck me as aesthetically pleasing. They certainly look cute clothed though. I planned on getting one of their open-eyed heads for painting practice, but when it comes to full dolls I'll most likely wind up sticking with resin in the future. My 43cm unoa poses and balances great, plus the resin is sturdier than you would think (of course, ever since I was wee I've always been super delicate with my toys, so perhaps my standards are off a bit) and I can't get over how beautiful it looks. But I'm not looking forward to the next time I'll have to restring her when I finally decide to do body blushing. That part was a total pain, and most BJD owners (who usually try to avoid it if they can) agree that it can be the worst part about owning these types of dolls. I can't imagine how hard it would be on a larger sized doll. Most BJDs aren't sold in kit form like my unoa was though.

As far a vinyl goes, there's also the Dollfie Dream body, which IMO, looks nicer, and costs about the same (which is surprising, considering it's from Volks, who always seem to charge about 30% more than the competition if they can help it). It has an internal skeleton like obitsu, and I've heard that they pose well too. The heads cost more though, and unlike Obitsu they don't come with a blank head when you order the base body. Which is probably just as well, because most of the DD open-eyed heads that I've seen look positively nightmarish. That said, if I were to get a vinyl doll body I'd probably wind up getting a DD. ASFAIK, you can fit an obitsu head on a DD body. I'd need to double check that though.

Are you thinking of getting an open-eyed head, or one of the ones with painted on anime eyes? Myself I've never really cared much for 60cm dolls with painted eyes, it's a style that to me looks better on the smaller 1/6 scaled dolls. And 60cm anime style doll seems too big for my tastes. Though I'm fine with that size with open-eyed BJDs.

Overall I'd say it comes down to what your tastes are, and what you want the doll to look like. Myself I plan on buying and painting some obitsu 27cm (1/6 scale) dolls in the future, but I'm not sure if I'd want a large vinyl BJD.

Whoops, forgot to link to the VolksUsa site, which is where you can order Dollfie Dreams. I haven't ordered from them yet, but I've heard that the shipping can be pretty steep.

I agree about painted eyes on bigger dolls, and that's a concern. But I figure with the Obitsu, I can give the stock head closed eyes, and get an open-eyed Haruka head later. (The open-eyed Obitsu heads don't need eye putty, which is another big plus.) And one of the first things I want to do is a Batgirl outfit, which covers the eyes anyway.

I do like the DD bodies, but I'm leery of Volks -- there's no indication of shipping cost on the site. And yeah, those highlight-added anime eyes are scary. They have better ones, though.
