I'm glad your family wasn't killed. ♥ It is hard to say that without sounding ridiculous. And, yuck, revolted by all the songs and movies about Starkweather. One day there will be a Snowtown movie or one about Bevan von Einem, and I will *not* see it.
:D There's a local ghost story about how the Wards' murdered dog will occasionally rush up to passersby and bark at them. Followed by some variant of, "Your dog's got loose." "We don't have a dog." *music sting*
Caryl Fugate is much more hated here than Starkweather. She was a cranky stoic on camera, what with being 14 and a lower-class bad girl and all, and the public wanted hysterical girlish remorse. Starkweather, now executed and no longer threatening, has become iconic and James Dean-ish, a folkloric goblin. This town is weird.
