Spent morning at the DMV, getting drivers license renewed.

Well, that's not entirely true. I was in and out of there in 10 minutes. The rest of it was spent punching my alarm clock really hard (some bastard set it to 'rooster,'), oversleeping, flailing on the kitchen floor with breakfast and a pot of coffee (it's a cozy-ish spot, if you're a floor dweller, with lots of light and space), finding the White Form they sent me last month, filling out the White Form, finding out they prefer cash, finding an ATM, and generally avoiding the task any way I could. Which was pointless, since the license people are, as a rule, perfectly nice. And I've never had an accident or ticket, and it was raining, so there was very little chance I'd be selected to drive.

Could not figure out reason for utter terror, until I remembered the last time I visited. Lowdown here: http://annlarimer.livejournal.com/710420.html

License picture is hideous, but you can't really see it for all the embedded holograms, and it's good until 2012 -- THE WORLD OF TOMORROW!

Also, White Form lady asked the dreaded question, "Oh! What are you reading?" "Uh. It's...these guys in Wales who fight demons and it rains a lot." "Okay."

Oh, I remember that older DMV post! I swear I've made a mental note to leave a nice, uplifting comment on that one.

I'd totally forgotten, until I tried to figure out why I was so upset this morning. Then I remembered the form lady...and the cops...and the locksmith...and the Cybermen.

Note to self: never move to Nebraska.

Here, they take debit cards, and they only time one needs to take a driving test is if you let your license expire (Marcia did that once. She lives about 2 seconds from the license office). Otherwise, it's when you take your first driving test, and then never again, til death do you and the Dept. of Revenue part.

I've never had to take a test, but they're allowed to pull anybody randomly (or, I suppose, if you look like you're drunk), and I imagine your odds increase if you've got points taken off your license. Basically, it's a completely groundless fear.

I don't think anything in state gov't takes plastic. Possibly the tax people.

Basement ice cream. Twisty soft-serve. Sometimes softer than others.

Sometimes soft-serve really just hits the spot. :-)

...What? They can randomly do that in Annland? Gosh.

They can make anybody drive, but rarely do beyond your first time, unless you give them a reason. (It was different in the old days, when they had more, and meaner, staff. There was a particularly feared employee called The Dragon Lady, who was said to make every client drive, and pass none of them. Though this is almost certainly untrue.)

Wow. That would sure make it hard to get around in Annland. Lots of space out there, I hear.

Dragon Lady has gone to the big waiting room in the sky, I expect?

Yup. And the public transport, while it could be worse, is slow and barfy.

I imagine so. Or she's in a retirement community somewhere, terrifying the board of governors.

You booktalk like me, except I can make eyes glaze over at 50 paces. Which is good, cuz then you can swipe their lunch money.
