...as whatever the Legislature has planned for cutting our budget will, we're told, be announced on the 29th. Rational Ann says that what's been hinted will probably be taken care of by attrition, and that seniority means the absolute worst that can happen is that I'll be shuffled to another division or department. Regular Ann finds the whole business nothing short of traumatic, and dreads being tossed out into the cold to find that the only local employment will exist in Insurance Hell. I think I'd rather die.

With luck I'll be able to put it out of my mind until the time comes.

Glack...

Can sympathize. Well, sort of, in an indirect way. My dad has worked for various local government agencies since I was a baby and has gotten shuffled around a lot doing various things or another, getting axed and being out of work for a couple of years during a really crappy recession, etc. It stunk, but it didn't last forever (best part of my dad being out of work in the early eighties: every weekend was a beach weekend!). I also remember for a while in the early nineties when the city had to lay off a bunch of building inspectors due to budget cuts, he had to work part-time as a clerk magistrate for the Traffic & Parking division despite having no prior experience doing so. About a year or so later, they rehired him as a building inspector when they were able to get more money, and he's worked there ever since. I imagine FL gov't work can't be -that- much different, in terms of "Hey, let's have the guys from this department go hang out in this department instead!" Also, should the worst come to fruition, at the very least it could be a little comforting that there will be a lot of other people in the same boat as you?

It's probably nothing, but it's maddening nonetheless. We've had, for all intents and purposes, a hiring freeze for the last five-ish years, and most of our money comes from Federal grants. My personal anxiety issues aside, it's not like we're a bloated tick feeding off the blood of the hard-working people of the plains. It's friggin' bewildering, is what it is.
