You bring them up from wild beasts to tribal societies to civilizations. Then you send them out to explore the universe and, in the end, discover the secret at the center of the galaxy. Which will probably turn out to be a sled.
(You can actually start with a one-celled creature, evolve it, and see what it turns into.)
