I thought you were very fond of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Obviously, I was wrong. :-)

I love the original Fantasia from 1940 and Aladdin, Bambi, and Beauty and the Beast. Enjoyed "The Increbibles" (as my grand-niece called them when the movie first came out) *despite* Craig T. Nelson. I never could see the big appeal of Shrek.

Love Lilo and Stitch.

Despite loving the book, I was not that taken with Howl's Moving Castle. Possibly because I'm not a big fan of anime. I found the movie kind of unpleasant and confusing, whereas the book was completely *not*.

Off to hunt up my Fantasia VHS tape....

Everybody thinks I'm goony for Nightmare Before Christmas. I like it fine, but it's not really mine, if you know what I mean.

I had so much fun doing this meme! I was able to see that I watched an impressive amount of animation and anime in the 70s and 80s, but it tapered off after I got married in the early 90s, so I can blame ComicbookMan for that. I was discomfited when the evil Disney empire schmoozed Miyazaki into signing over his work, but they didn't do nearly as bad a job as I thought they would. In fact, I thought that Spirited Away was better dubbed in English than subtitled, which surprised me no end.

I'm with you with the Bakshi-hate. Shrek movies are kind of unrelenting yuck-yuck machines, but I don't mind them. Likewise, I did not mind Craig T. Nelson as a voice in The Incredibles, though, yeah, the actor himself creeps me out.

Please tell all what you thought of Song of the South. I've read the synopsis and my jaw was on the floor. I knew ol' Walt was a sexist, but who knew he was that much of a racist? Did it blow you away with the horror, the horror, or did it give the impression of just being of its time. Or both?

Disney actually did right by Miyazaki. I know, I was shocked, too.

Song of the South. Oh, golly. I haven't seen it since its last (I hope it was its last) theatrical re-release.

Okay, I've been trying to find out when I saw it. The last theatrical releases are listed as 1980 and 1986, which are both far too late. I can't find a late-60s early-70s release date, but it could have been a one-off children's matinee or something. Anyway.

My big brother Billy took me to see it, which he was always great about. (He took me to see 2001 at the drive-in when I was 6 or 7, and didn't even complain when I puked in his car.)

My main memories are that it was really, really gorgeous, and I liked the songs. I usually hated the songs in kids' movies, but these didn't suck. I totally didn't get the horror, the horror, other than Um, wait, I'm not sure this is an accurate depiction of post-Civil War race relations. Look, talking rabbits!

I had no further contact with it until we went to Disney World in 2001. Splash Mountain is a great ride, but I am by no means the only person to mime cocking and shooting a shotgun at Brer Rabbit and company.

who knew he was that much of a racist?

Uh. Everybody?

You know, I'm aware of the Br'er Rabbit stuff, but I have no idea from where.

Mostly I remember a lot of Tar Baby.

I kind of like the idea that I've learned how to suck culture out of the very air itself.

Well, yeah (and "duh"), now that we're adults. But I grew up in an era where "Uncle Walt" was a hero, and we did NOT know he was a racist at all. Being girls ourselves, my sister and I always kinda got that his take on girls was off, so realizing he was a sexist didn't surprise us. His racism and antisemitism was an unwelcome surprise and a view into our own privilege.

Aww, why the Last Unicorn hate if you haven't seen it? Of course, I first saw it when I was 5, so my undying love for it may be a little skewed. I do prefer the book. My favorite memory of the movie may be of watching it in the living room at our house when the elderly pastor of my family's church dropped in...just during the scene where the bare-breasted harpy attacks Mommy Fortuna. I was old enough at the time to appreciate the moment.

I loved The Fox and the Hound as a child, but after watching it as an adult...yeah. Pretty awful. But I did enjoy the book. I think I can say that for a lot of movies on this list -- animated movies were the lead-in to a hefty percentage of my childhood reading.
