"What is an owl pellet? It's the football-shaped object regurgitated twice a day by owls, which contains the skeleton of at least one owl meal, be it a mouse, vole, shrew, or small bird."

You didn't get the lesson in elementary school where you cut open the owl pellet with scalpels and picked out the tiny bones inside?

Fourth grade was a while ago. My memory may be retroactively upgrading the coolness of things. (Give it a couple more decades and I'll be regaling everyone with stories of my exciting elementary school flamethrower adventures.)

I remember doing this in middle school. I think they gave us toothpicks and tweezers.

I may be remembering things wrong. Toothpicks and tweezers sounds more plausible.

I don't recall what we used to take them apart, but we definitely disected them in 5th grade. We even had printed sheets with skeletons of usual owl dining where we could place the bones when we found them.

So maybe it _is_ waiting for the robins to come back. Although I don't recall off-hand how big robins are, so maybe they're not that small.
