Anyone who uses the phrase, "Now, I'm no Holmes purist" in a review of anything Sherlock Holmes is about to completely lose their shit over some perceived crime against Conan Doyle, Holmes, the readers, or humanity committed by the work reviewed.

Every time someone loses their minds over some perceived ruination of their beloved Holmesian characters, I go put in Without A Clue and watch Michael Caine play Sherlock as a stumbling, alcoholic buffoon while Ben Kingsley's Watson calls him every name in the book. And then I am soothed.

I love that movie.

Also love "They Might Be Giants". George C. Scott as a man deluded that he is Sherlock Holmes and Joanne Woodward as his psychiatrist who just happens to be Dr. Watson. It's a charmer.
