Whether or not you decide to import your LJ over here, don't forget that doing so will not automatically import your photo gallery. You'll need to go in to your gallery and save your pictures one at a time to a drive.
It's a very good idea to have a look at what you've got there. I found versions of a bunch of photos and art that I thought was lost when my first ipod died.

If you've forgotten your password, you're still good as long as you can remember your username and have access to the last email account associated with the journal.
Kindle Fire, unsurprisingly, will not let you download your art, even if you're signed in to your own account and using its web browser. It will let you take screen grabs if that's your last resort, but this will be very annoying.
A smartphone will work perfectly well if you have enough storage, and then have a way to send your pics somewhere else. Mine uploaded to my Google drive without a problem. I haven't checked yet to see if Amazon photo took it automatically, since my phone's awful software separates downloads and photos.
