Okay, Good Omens fandom? When Crowley talks about showing Jesus the nations of the world, he was not doing the poor kid a favor because he's really nice deep down.

I don't expect anybody to read the whole Bible, because let's face it, a lot of that stuff is shitnuts, but Wikipedia is your pal.

...very glad I'm largely avoiding fandom. Crowley is nicer than one would expect from a demon, so of course they slam him straight into, "Lovely boy, never meant any harm, only wants to help people."

And, like, it really helps to understand at least the basics of Bible stories before attempting to interpret Good Omens.

I started off pretty annoyed by the quantity of people who clearly felt no particular urgency about reading the novel or knowing anything about the Bible.

But somewhere in there I started to find the earnest obliviousness kind of charming. Like, they just blithely want to share and don't have the faintest inkling that people might ever try to know what they're talking about before they start writing!

It was already funny, but this is definitely one of the best a) results of the above Dunning-Kruger situation and b) Sad Misunderstood Woobie Crowley claims I've encountered.

LOL.

I don't know if encounters with an unexpected ignorance really induce quite such extreme overconfidence, but I have observed that children can be made to feel very expert in things by explaining them to smaller children, so it's probably a dangerous psychological phenomenon with its own name somewhere.

And also, Ann, didn't you know that the Archangel Raphael was the angel of healing, which was why he felt such intense doubt about whether it was necessary for people and/or children to suffer for the ineffable plan? And that really it was therefore his extraordinary kindness and empathy that caused him to fall, when he actually didn't know anything was wrong whatsoever with wanting answers, which was all he did until suddenly he was being boiled in sulphur and we're not quite sure how Lucifer and the boys came into it but whatever? And that in fact, throughout his time on earth, Crowley has never caused anybody pain or suffering on purpose, and has been sneaking around helping and healing people, saving children because that's exactly the same as his line 'Not the KIDS?', and crying emo tears when he's alone because he just feels so much pain for the world and the humans?

Oh, and don't forget the apparently now dominant fanon that Crowley doesn't do anything whatsoever to his plants when he carries them out, but secretly nurses them in a plant hospital or plants them in a park, because OBVIOUSLY he couldn't be HURTING or KILLING them, because that would be MEAN?

That's... well... it's certainly an interesting take on his character.

It reminds me of what I previously thought was peak fanon woobie, Methos (HE WAS LITERALLY DEATH!!!), who was frequently seen completely devoid of assertiveness or self value until treated with the Healing Cock of the Scottish Highlands.

It's hard to be interested in watching, to be fair. I watched through a curated series of just the Methos eps at a series of fannish watching parties with the aid of a large quantity of snacks and alcohol, and that was barely enough to make it bearable.
