DVD players are confusing as hell if you want to use them to their full extent. I won one in a draw, and in order to get what's known as 'The DVD expierence', you end up having to control this thing with three remotes. You have to hit three buttons to turn it on and off ... evil, ir is >.
You must have some freako DVD, then... three remotes? Huh? They're very easy to use, I think. I mean, you can't zoom in on images on a VCR, for one, or choose multiple crazy angles (well, these features also depend on the disc), or watch Joe Versus the Volcano in Japanese with Portuguese subtitles...
Order carefully. There will be two versions in two releases; all the best stuff including the 30 minutes of additional footage will be on the second version which won't be out till November, I believe.
I'm still relying on the DVD-Rom drive in my computer(s). I have no room for a real DVD player...or the money! But prices are dropping so I know I'll get sucked in soon. Hold out for the special Edition in the Fall -- it's gonna have more fun stuff!
Actually I read the other day that each of the 3 releases will have different special stuff, so you can buy all three. The one in August is the only release of the theatrical version, November is a longer "cut" with diff extras and the biggie box set is supposedly having all the unreleased footage making up the "directors cut". It's sad - I've already started budgeting for all three. The way I hear it - they'll do this marketing ploy for all three movies...someone will make the bucks.
I don't know what they run in the UK, Dayze - I know the DVDs cost more over there (as do CDs), though y'all seem to have a much better selection of titles. (Actually you should ask parvati up there...) Here you can get a bare-bones player for a hundred dollars or less - though I'd like a region-free model.
They can be had for $80 in Chicago, so I suspect slightly less in Wisconsin. ;-) I dunno about the rest of the universe, but I heard there was one for $80 in New Jersey.
I never had a CD player, I just went straight to a DVD player, and it plays both.
I just saw this on QVC - gave me a giggle, but not a bad low end machine nor a bad price.
