Stayed busy all day. Went out to get some dinner and started bawling in Fazoli's drive-through.

Now Tom Brokaw is telling me to go outside and look at the stars. I would like to punch him in the testicles.

is meant to be a way of saying, "Yes, this is a terrible tragedy, and we're all grief stricken and blah blah blah, but remember there's so much more that we can't let this stop us. [Y]our children could grow up to be the ones who make space flight no longer dangerous. Encourage them."


But you know, on TV every second counts so you have to shorten it into something quick.

I think it was meant to be that once upon a time. Unfortunately, I also think it's become a knee-jerk formula response that doesn't mean much of anything any more.

My mom's impulse, like that of many parents, is to want to hug her kids when there's bad news, even though neither of us has been a kid in quite some time. It reassures her that she still has us. Honest reaction, *so* different from telling other people to do it. And the latter really does annoy me a lot.
