Out at lunchtime, found myself behind the Redneck Black Pick-Up Truck. Truck:

-Is black (duh)
-Has foot-tall American flag sticker on its rear hatch.
-Has two American flag stickers on its bumper.
-Has plastic American flag on pole on roof.
-Has (this is the best bit) yet another bumper sticker that says 'TERRORISM' with a slash drawn through it. Apparently so that the driver will not be mistaken for a member of the vast worldwide pro-terrorism demographic.

I just know the owner has a 'THESE COLORS DON'T RUN' t-shirt in his closet.

THESE COLORS DON'T RUN. T-shirt designs with this legend often worn by yer Wal-Mart demographic in times of war, depicting an American flag (along with, say, a cranky cartoon eagle). Every bit as stupid as it sounds. For people who find the "Ayatollah Assahola" and "Terrorism Sucks!" t-shirts too vulgar.

I don't know what the Canadian equivalent would be. It's sort of like a "I believe the beaver is a proud and noble animal" shirt, only, y'know, completely stupid.

If there were any sporks in the house, I'd perform the last act of Oedipus Rex right here.

Curious: How does "these colours don't run" blend with the "melting pot" idea? Is it like some uber-stew where cultures get mixed to produce one product, (probably blander than white bread), which remains as is, regardless of what happens? Taking, as an example, Angel's hair gel, in that category.

I've missed out on so many important things due to being an evil furriner, Ann! (Although I did hear that post-September 11, the US government did start finally classifying US supporters of the IRA as "terrorist sympathisers", thankfully).

Strangely, before September 11, they were classified as the New York City police force.

(ooooooooooo, I'm gonna get smacked for that!)

I had some pretty nasty times landing in SFO from Heathrow with some suspicious-to-them stamps in my visa (Barcelona and Morocco is what did it, I figure) and an Irish last name, pre-Sept. 11, and, I have to suppose, the countenance of a gun-runner. Just sayin'....
