Wheee! Millennium boxed set arrived. Pretty pretty pretty. ^_^

Trying to look at picture rather than decipher the Japanese subtitles. Except, hey, I just learned how to write 'kilometer.'

It's like the time I saw All That Jazz in Paris and I kept reading the French subtitles and mentally worrying at them when they didn't match the English. Except I could actually read the French. So it's not like that time at all. Never mind.

All That Jazz is called Et la Spectacle Commence in French. Roughly, It's Showtime, Folks.

I thought you needed to know that.

My favourite Fellini film is called 'i vitelloni', which literally means 'big pieces of veal', but in some regional slang it translates as 'no-good, lazy layabouts'. The American name of the film is 'The Young and the Passionate'. And in french, it's 'Les inutiles'!

Watching the pilot right now.

The picture quality isn't insanely perfect. It's got some...rhumba to it, like a video. And I don't think the Japanese subtitles turn off. But you get 20 episodes for 30-40 bucks.

Now, despite what the listing said, I'm not at all convinced that these are licensed. There's no copyright info. The English text is in a rather indifferent Times. The art and printing aren't anything like as nice as, say, the calendars, and could easily have been done on desktop. The underside of the disk isn't bar-coded or anything. The only disclaimer says SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION TO 500 COPIES. STRICTLY AND ABSOLUTELY FOR JAPAN MEDIA PROMOTIONAL PUPPOSES[sic] ONLY. Ummmmmkay.

I picked up All That Jazz on DVD at Tarzhay for $9.44 Wednesday night. It's pretty decent; I like the Roy Schieder commentary and the snippets of Fosse directing, but I kinda wish they'd gotten commentary from Ann Reinking too.

*g* Exactement. I know what you mean (not that I can read any foreign language beyond a word or two), just from English films. The subtitling in English for Fellowship of the Ring doesn't always match the actual dialogue. Same for Big Eden, I seem to recall. (I find that with my hearing slowly deteriorating, just like my father's and grandmother's before me, it's great to have the ability to turn on the English subtitles on DVD's -- no missing bits then, or having to rewind back and cup my ear to figure out what's been said. I find the volume on a lot of videotapes and DVD's doesn't go loud enough.)

We did need to know that. Our lives would be incomplete otherwise. I wouldn't have known to translate that into it's non-literal meaning -- I'd've thought "And The Show Begins" (which one doesn't really have to know French, except maybe for "et", to get. Speaking of this, the other day at my part time job, where most of the people are fairly literate, I got a name on my list that was "Lewis E. Clark" and I was joking that the "E." must stand for "et". Nobody got it. *grumble* At least they laughed about the name -- they got that much).

That subtitle thing is annoying. I don't really have to look at subtitles if the thing is in English. But I still keep doing it because I am so used to doing it from all the anime I've been watching. But when I watch English DVDs in someone's company, I prefer to have English subs on. That way I can talk with my friends during the movie, without missing important dialogue.

Oooh! I see you are watching Boogiepop Phantom. What do you think of it? Most people I know didn't get it and thought it wad dead boring (I'm among them), but I actually know some people who seriously loved it.... It's a weird thing nevertheless. And RoD is sweet, in it's own way.

I've only seen most of the first Boogiepop, so I can't judge it too well yet, but I really like the style, and I'm a sap for urban horror series, so right now I like it very much.

RoD is totally spiffy. It's like pie. ^_^
