Whoah. Bialosky repro bear, mint with tag. Five bucks at the place that used to repair lawn mowers. Huh, and indeed, za.

Oh my gosh, Bialosky?! I always wanted a Bialosky. Envy. What's he like?

Very personable. I held his paw on the way back from the garage, and he has a solid, reassuring grip. He's one of the mass-market bears by Gund from the early 80s. Fully jointed, plush slightly spikey to resemble mohair, peach plush paws, yarn nose and mouth. Upturned face, shaved but not particularly pointy muzzle, like some early American bears. Husky build, 10" standing and 10" from paw to paw. Velour clothing with twill trim. This one is a bit walleyed, with a slightly anxious expression. No coffee for him.

Oh hell. He saw me type that, and now he's giving me a look.

I was amazed. It was never a terribly good store, but suddenly they seem to have cleaned up their stock and lowered their prices. O_o

Do you collect used bears and have any in particular you're looking for? My local thrift shop gets wonderful bears--some with their price tags attached still--and I only go for the koalas, but would be glad to keep an eye out for ones you're looking for. They sell them all for a dollar or a two.

That's incredibly nice of you! I'm not looking for anything in particular (unless you come across a Steiff Alfonso...though if you do, for God's sake, grab him, put him on eBay, and he'll keep you in koalas for months). They're kind of like cats -- you don't know you've got one until the cat tells you so, if you know what I mean.

Have you seen the wicked cool National Geographic mom and baby koala? She's got huge leather claws with which to defend him. Or climb. I'm not sure what they do with their claws.

I spent all last week trying to convince Mom that the refs at the Australian Open were making such bad calls because of their frequent koala-related injuries. She hit me with a cushion.

Will keep my eyes open for the Steiff. Umm, not sure, but me, I'm picky about stuffies' faces--if it doesn't appeal to me it don't come home with me. And if it don't want to come home with me, then it knows to screw up its face.

I have seen them! I'm waiting for one to show up in the thrift shop. It will. I'm patient. It will. They use their claws for picking up their remotes.

Several produce Original Creative Works.

Others just run off with my cellphone and IM people. Naughty bears!

I don't suppose you know where I could find a koala who might be looking for a home...

I bet they're the angsty ones.

Yeah, I know some action figures who do that.

Well, I scored an additional beanie baby koala at the thrift shop today that is--do you collect those little ones? There's a felt grey one that's not that great that is the most common to find, but this one is a greyish-teal velveteen and is a much nicer variety--I already have two--one sits on my dashboard and the other on my desk at work.

I once had a koala, made of rabbit (I hope) fur.

This was how I found out that dogs and things made of dead animals don't really get along, and that the dogs always win.

I can't find one of him! I found one listed on a used-toy site, but there was no photo. eBay has tons of Bialosky bears, but none of this guy. They made a second sailor bear, dressed in white, and she's all over the place.

I will keep looking.

SUPERFREAKOUT!

Okay, my brother had a bear named Bialosky and until now I didn't realize it was a brand - I thought perhaps one of my parents named it. WHOA! Right. He also wrote a short story about some crazy assassian and his associate, one Mr Bialosky, who ended up being a teddy bear (natch).

Right. Moving along now.

Heee! They're named for Peggy and Alan Bialosky, who wrote a book circa 1980 called The Teddy Bear Catalogue for Workman. This was spun into a line of bears, books, calendars, figurines, etc. that still continues, though it is no longer at its peak. The Teddy Bear Calendar still comes out every year. Some of the stuff is really cool and charming, some of it makes me want to fwow up. I have a nifty old coffee mug of the Bialosky Bear logo, with its motto "100% Loyal and True," which I will love until the inevitable day that I drop it on cement.

(I'm a bigger fan of Peter Bull's The Teddy Bear Book.)

Usedtabe a great shop in Quincy Market, Boston, before it became the ultra-chiiiique haunt of brainless white folks. Called Bear-Something...never mind about that. Great bumper sticker with grizzly bear doing black pride salute, reading SUPPORT YOUR RIGHT TO ARM BEARS. Dearly wanted one, but no point, as had neither car nor license at that point.
