Tell me about this Mike Oldfield guy. I *think* the title of that album is a phonetic spelling of the Irish Gaelic word for "fool", "amadan" (which should have an accent over the final a).

No idea about 'amadan' -- it could easily be the case. There's not much in the liner notes beyond some technical stuff. It's a fab album, though. M.O. is best known for Tubular Bells, excerpts of which were used in The Exorcist. I really don't know much about him, apart from liking his music. I'm a bad, bad fan.

Also, I didn't get a chance to thank you for the balloons. So: Thank you for the balloons! They're keen. ^_^

Mike Oldfield also has a nice album called "Voyager" which is kind of Celtic. His "Songs of Distant Earth" is one of my top ten favorite albums. Sample some of the songs and see what you think.

it's not spam if it's from you!

"Songs of Distant Earth" arrived last week, and I spent a happy Sunday with it. I'm considering "Voyager," though the burly man on the cover kind of puts me off.

My more detailed LP booklet says "Asked about the title, he'll explain that it's one of the words written by Clodagh Simonds for her chanting one Side One [of the album], "and I think that it all means something backwards."

I think it means that Mike Oldfield is a sloppy researcher.

Or Clodagh likes to mess with him.

Bastard! I really need to get it on CD. Unless I have it already.

Okay. Actually, I really need to organize my CDs.

It's on CD, so I guess I really should replace the now missing LP with a shiny new CD.

Hmmmm...I only have History of the Bonzos and Ziggy Stardust. Can't get rid of the albums. Not ready. No stereo but that's an insignificant detail.

I'm considering frames for a couple of my album covers. History of the Bonzos would be kinda spiffy on a wall.

Not that I recall. It did favor one of the extra sides over the other, to the point that I played it several times before I realized that there were three.

Hee. You have an absolute collector's item, then. Most of the ones they printed ended up skipping because the tracks were stamped too close together. It didn't so much repeat from one spot, but rather skipped over to the other track because the needle went to the path of least resistance.

I can get mine to play through both tracks on that side if I weigh down the needle with a couple of pennies. Dear lord, I am SO OLD.

BWAH! If you're somewhere and a CD skips, and you tell whoever's there to put a penny on the needle, they just stare. Naturally I do so whenever possible.

There was a downturn in the quality of vinyl pressing (and the quality of the vinyl itself) in the early 80s that basically made me stop buying records altogether. I'd return an album and be told that I should adjust the pressure on my turntable arm. "Okay, so I should increase the wear to all these hundreds of other albums that I own that play just fine because the two copies I've tried of this new album have a defect in the exact same spot? Uh, no."
