"French" is when you paint (or chalk or whatever -- there are different ways to do it) your nails to mimic their natural coloring, except more durable. In this case, it meant that it looked like there was OMG HUMONGOUS REAL FINGERNAIL that had been ripped out and left on the sink.
And yes, that would be more of an OMGWTF moment than if it was a colored nail. At least those you could think they dropped it when they were trying to put it on or something.
