Saw big chunks of Troy last night. Really, really funny stuff. Which is NOT HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO THE ILIAD, YOU TOOLS. I know Achilles isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but damn...

I kind of want to own a copy now.

I watched it a while ago with my mom, who likes mythology but is by no means a scholar on it, and even SHE could point out lots of things that were wrong. It was hilarious.

And there was lots of man candy.

Ah, Troy. The movie that began with Brad Pitt's ass, and I still walked out after 20 minutes.

Hurrrrgh.

*snort*

I could not sit through it. That's saying something. I just got the feeling that the creators were sitting there, "Let's make it EPIC MYTH! But REALISTIC! With lots of crazy MYTHIC super powers but all done like it's FOR REAL!" Hunh.

And I'm sorry, I cannot stand Orlando Bloom. Too pretty for his own good, alas.

Anyway, moving along...

Ah, Orlando Bloom, proud graduate of the "Hugh Grant School of Acting," leaders in the two-emotion acting cocktail - earnest or confused.

Now with a daring third option - earnestly confused.

Thank you! Two actors who have, as the great Dorothy Parker would have put it, the full acting range from A to B.

Of course, there's that other acting school, The William Shatner School of Fine Acting. Otherwise known as Emote. Like. This.

"And in conclusion, *cousin*."

Cleolinda had some great raw material to work with in this movie.

I cackled my way through Troy when I saw it in the theatre. The most ernestly made self-parody ever.

If you thought that was whacky, try this. It will melt your brain.

I hate people who talk in movie theaters, but I couldn't stop snarking out loud during this one. It drove me to break my own movie rule. Damn you, stinky movie.

My 'favorite' moment (spoiler alert!) is Odysseus's realization that he should have the army build a big wooden horse. He actually scratches his chin and seems to go, "hmmmmmm...."

Did you spot the llama? The llama was my favorite of the many Completely Ridiculous Things about Troy.

If I recall correctly, it's in a crowd scene near the beginning of the movie. It's like a secret signal to the audience: Yes, llamas in Troy. This is the level of historical and literary accuracy you can expect from this film. (I've seen an icon somewhere on LJ or JF of the llama, with the caption "Newsflash! Ancient trade with the New World confirmed!")

Ah! No, I came in when the Well-Greaved Achaens (spelling approximate) were marching up to the walled city, with the hilarious reaction shots and the faster choo-choo faster! score.

Wait. Llamas are South American, aren't they?

Wait. Llamas are South American, aren't they?

Yep. And I can't imagine they're terribly strong swimmers.

I wanted to walk out right of that movie. Even the mighty combined presence of Bean and Bana in historical costume wasn't enough to sustain my interest. Alas, I was with friends.
