All of that work and promo and the best they could come up with was "Princess Ai"?

Tokyo Pop's publisher also thought that "Sushi Squad" and "Karma Club" were good names for American manga propeties, and put out Sailor Moon in weird-ass order so he wouldn't have to deal with the two lesbian Sailors.

Did they? I never read Sailor Moon, so I had no idea. Huh. How very Cardcaptors of them.

And interesting that they've gone from that to publishing Fake and Gravitation. Did they start to go broke? Did someone take over the office in a bloody coup? Was there a brain transplant involved? Or are they just afraid of lesbians?

No idea. I guess they figured out that cartoon gay people did not cause the world to end, or get them condemned by whoever it is that condemns these things, and that there was money to be made. They embraced the HoYay.

(They did publish all of Sailor Moon eventually, but it was strange going there for a while.)

Yes. Yes, it does.

HoYay - Abbreviation of "Homoeroticism yay!" Derived, as nearly as I can tell, from "Vampires yay," a line from an old Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Phrase used in media fandom, in the context of series with blatant gay subtext such as Smallville, or to encourage one to enjoy slashiness in general. I first saw it used on televisionwithoutpity.com, but I don't know if it originated there.

Examples:
"I gave in and wrote a Wesley/Gunn story. I have embraced the HoYay."
"I enjoy the HoYay as much as the next girl, but I just don't see them as slashable."
