No idea. I guess they figured out that cartoon gay people did not cause the world to end, or get them condemned by whoever it is that condemns these things, and that there was money to be made. They embraced the HoYay.

(They did publish all of Sailor Moon eventually, but it was strange going there for a while.)

HoYay - Abbreviation of "Homoeroticism yay!" Derived, as nearly as I can tell, from "Vampires yay," a line from an old Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Phrase used in media fandom, in the context of series with blatant gay subtext such as Smallville, or to encourage one to enjoy slashiness in general. I first saw it used on televisionwithoutpity.com, but I don't know if it originated there.

Examples:
"I gave in and wrote a Wesley/Gunn story. I have embraced the HoYay."
"I enjoy the HoYay as much as the next girl, but I just don't see them as slashable."
