Brown, as it turns out, is a handsome copper color when clean. (The same as Chomsky Sauron, for those of you who've met her.) Two bags of stuffing later, he is twice as fluffy, weighs half as much, and now has - who knew? -- a pointy snout and an actual butt. There is some seam strain damage at the feet and paws, which will have to be patched. I'm not sure what I'll do about his missing eye. I'd like him to have a monocle, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm making him a nightshirt and cap in bright blue.

White seems to feel better about the whole business, seeing his friend revitalized, but I'm still not looking forward to slicing him open.

I have this image in my head of the Sharon-drawn-"You've ruined Christmas!"-Ann with a maniacal look on her face with a giant scalpel while White quivers, strapped to a table.

Yay Copper-brown bear!

Could you maybe glue some kind of tiny clear plastic rings to the inner edge of the back side of the monocle, then sew through those rings with a few stitches into the bear to hold the monocle in place?

The glue won't hold. (Trust me on this.) The difficulty isn't so much in the attachment as in the finding and/or making the monocle. But something will turn up.

Monocle

Maybe you could take a pair of teddy bear/doll glasses and cut out one of the lenses? Maybe Mr. Google has some ideas.

I can't remember if monocles have a frame around them, or are just the lens. Build-a-Bear has round glasses that (with a tin snip or wire cutter to get rid of the unwanted parts of the frame) *might* somehow work.

Oh, btw, I could go to Build-a-Bear next week if you want the glasses -- I'm getting a ride to the high-rent-district Kinko's near there -- and pick them up for you, then mail 'em first class, if it'll save you postage.

Aw, thanks, but no. I think the BAB stuff is too small for him (he's 2-3 feet tall), and I'd just as soon find something all unexpected like. ;)

Whew! That is one *honkin'* big bear!

Good luck on finding the monocle.

Eyepatch, end of story.

I've been loving these progress reports. I should really fish childhood bear (whom, IIRC, I called "Sooty" after a simialar bear in some picturebook) out of the Big Bag O' Stuffies when I'm in Columbus this weekend and give him a rehab. You've inspired me!

Chomsky Sauron is really the best name ever. I mean... wow.

Isn't it great? She's named for the MESPT's own [livejournal.com profile] chomsky_sauron, daughter of Faramir.

Here she is in doll form:

Does the monocle need to be clear? I was thinking you could maybe make something with a small round (wire or plastic) frame and some kind of filmy material. And maybe some kind of metallic yarn for the "chain."

I think you're on to something. It doesn't actually have to have a lens at all, though that would be nice. Something like a brass macrame ring might work. I can just stitch it to his little head. Big head.

I'm thinking ribbon rather than chain.

If the point of the monocle is to cover the missing eye, you wouldn't want a lens anyway, right?

Nah. It doesn't need to cover it. It's a style thing.
