The other night Mom made lemon Jell-O. Which would be okay, but not only did she add festive peeled carrots to it, not only did she add meant to be festive but in its final effect entirely puzzling cottage cheese curds, so the whole thing look liked a badly neglected aquarium, no, not only these things, but when she cut the Jell-O into serving-sized slabs, she adhered a single grape to the top of each with a dollop of Miracle Whip.

I think she may be trying to kill me.

My mind keeps trying to see this as "whipped cream" or "Cool Whip" or something else that makes some tiny smidgen of culinary sense...

You know the worst part? Before I put it in my mouth, I assumed it was cottage cheese.

*shudder*

I'm trying very hard to picture this dish, but my brain keeps attempting to shut off in protest. Clearly it know its own limitations.

If I knew for a fact that she can't even switch a computer on, I'd swear she'd been surfing the Gallery of Regrettible Food.

It was the Miracle Whip that made it special.

Oh, I'm sure that was it.

But the carrots and cottage cheese must have added texture.

Uh... did you eat it?

I had to eat the Jell-O to get the surprising taste of Miracle Whip the hell out of my mouth.

I just read this out to my other half. We agree that your mother is probably trying to get revenge for the trees incident last weekend.

Then I read the comments. And I remembered that Miracle Whip is not a fake cream, but a fake mayonnaise. (I think it was on the market over here for about 10 minutes in total about 10 to 15 years ago.)

The rest all makes a weird sense - my mother, for example, does a great salad dish involving fresh beetroot from the garden, onion and blackcurrant jelly (sounds disgusting, tastes marvellous). But she'd never let even *real* mayonnaise near the stuff.

The ball's in your court now. Your mother is expecting you to respond with something even better than that, you know.

Well... this dish of which you speak was creative, and is perhaps a sign of an active mind?

And, using Miracle Whip -- and yes, I was one of those whose brain inserted "Cool Whip" for this until reading the comments -- as an adhesive is *truly* thinking outside the box. Especially as a dessert adhesive.

~hugs~ Poor darling. My mom incorporated leftover mashed potatoes into chocolate-chip cookies once, but I think your mom wins the weird dessert competition.

Ooh, my mom makes a similar dish, which we lovingly refer to as "the green stuff". If it fails to make an appearance at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, we launch violent protests.

Lime jello, whipped cream, and cottage cheese all mixed together. My favorite is when she adds pineapple bits and walnuts. Yummy yummerson.
